There is nothing better than salt in the air and sand in my hair (what's left of it).

Started out really good - but then it got a liitle soft.   The bay was the ticket.

Damn

Woke up at 5 this morning and took the pugs out back to go potty.   The air was dead calm and there was no sign of the predicted rain.   I thought I was going to get lucky again.  Suited up in the garage and hauled ass to you know where.   On the way it started to drizzle, by the time I got to the parking lot it was pouring rain and the flag was south.   Just to be sure I drove to T street for a quick look: Blown.

So today I'll just have to be thankful that I was able to surf the last four mornings.   Thanks to Phil for sending me this photo from yesterday.  Is that a UFO?

Groundhog Day

The best days are when your expectations are low.   Thanks to Surfline for forecasting  1’ – 2’.  Reality: consistent chest to head high (+), off-shore, warm water, and nobody out when I pulled up.   It doesn’t get any better than this.

Satisfaction

I paddled out with one other guy at 6:30am; still dark, a little orange on the horizon and some moonlight. We had consistent chest to head high waves and a strong off-shore wind. Got a barrel right off the bat with the lights from SONGS showing the way. No one else showed up on the beach until 7:00 or so. These are the days that keep me coming back for more.

How do you explain this feeling of fulfillment to people who don’t surf?

Driving to work after this morning’s session I was caught in a traffic jam going north on the 5. Came off on PCH in Dana, stopped for a cup of Java and leisurely cruised the coast into work; a little late but without regret.

Dude

Sweet

A bit smaller today, a lot less people and the same perfect conditions.   Only surfed for a hour and a half.   Stupid daylight savings time.    Today would have been a good day to play hooky, but duty calls.    My camera is just about dead, can't zoom anymore - replacement on the way.

Classic

Nice semi-consistent waist to head high waves this morning with a stiff off-shore breeze and warm water.

It was a classic California fall morning. Only in the water for 1.5 hours but caught 10 -12 waves on my 6’4” plank. Not bad for an old guy.

Thank God my Dad bought me that first surfboard in 1968.   It was a dinged up 9'6" Dewey Weber with a set of wood car racks for $40.  The guy wanted $60, but my Dad got him down to $40.  That was my first stoke.

The crowd thinned from the weekend, but it was still a popular spot for the morning, with an assortment of the usual suspects. When I get to work after a morning like this, it’s really hard to focus. I keep reviewing in my mind the set waves that I rode all the way into the bay……. Uh-Oh here comes my boss!

Late Weekend Post

Too busy to post the weekend surf pics.   Forgot my camera Saturday, so only have pics for Sunday.   Saturday had a little wind on it early, but it glassed off later.  Pretty crowded but I got my share.  Sunday was much cleaner, a tad bigger, just as crowded, but managed to catch a few overhead set waves.  Better to be lucky then good.

Five days without surfing. Five days of corporate conference food. Four nights of evening functions and adult beverages. I’m getting fat and lazy. Thank God it’s over and I can get back to my regular routine. But when the hell does daylight savings time end? Trying to plan my dawn patrols for next week and there is very little time due to the late sunrise. Daylight savings time should be abolished, it serves no function. We can’t even coordinate it with other states let alone the rest of the world. F it, nobody I know likes it, what’s the F’n point?

I’ll have some cheese with that whine please.

Here’s a diversion from this boredom.

Less Drizzle, Less Swell

Another good day, a little less consistent than yesterday and a tad smaller.

Heavy Drizzle

Really fun, head high plus waves. A bit crowded but only got burned once.

Glassy and Cloudy

Nice head high waves today (a few overhead) with glassy conditions.   A bit of a slalom course dodging the people hangin’ on the inside.   All in all a good, if not a short session.  Got to push the wagon hard this week.   Next week is looking even worse, but I’ll find a way to get wet a couple of times, one way or the other.

A Quickie

A little weak this morning.   Belly to chest high.   Epic conditions.  My camera is acting up, couldn't zoom in.   Probably time for an upgrade.   Here's a link to the pictures from Sept 29th, lots of pictures of Nick and Richard: http://www.vivantvie.com/California/uppers29sept2010/14152337_C5nU3#1044058814_6iD4A

Then on the way home from work I saw these characters hanging out on a hill near my house in SJC:

10-10-10

Perfect fall conditions, warm water, still tiny.    Not nearly as crowded as yesterday.   But a few fun ones were had; when they came.

A little air cover today
